Historically Mersing was opened back in 1892 by MOHD SALLEH BIN PERANG, who held the title of Dato’ Bentara Luar. An interview with one Mr. Hussin bin Mohamad however suggests that the Dato’ Bentara Luar was only involved in land surveying for the Mersing district.
Oral history with regard to how Mersing got its name, points to a Sikh man by the name of Amir Singh or Men Singh. He is said to have been a fugitive from neighbouring Pahang, where he had taken the liberty of liberating a concubine from the Sultan of Pahang.
Other accounts tell of KANGKA being a popular name linked to Mersing, originating from the Hokkien word for ‘ESTUARY’. During the 1880s, commercial vessels like the Hong Yat ship plied the Mersing River loaded with cargo of dried fish. Goods were unloaded at a jetty which is the namesake of the present day Jalan Jeti and the thriving Chinese community there also lays claim to the origins of the Mersing name.
According to one Abdul Malek Munip, Chinese immigrants in the state, including those in Mersing, migrated here at the behest of the Maharaja Abu Bakar under the Kang Chu system; which saw the immigrant labour planting gambier and black pepper on the banks of Sungai Besar.
The immigrants quickly opened a settlement in Kangka, known as Kangka Apeng, following the royal invitation. Today the site is known as the Kuala Mayang Rubber and Oil Palm Estate.
Mersing’s development has always been based in agriculture, through land schemes like FELDA, FELCRA and RISDA. The land schemes have gradually altered the very face of Mersing town.
Back then, settlements like Lubok (present day Pengkalan Batu, Tenglu, Sri Pantai to name a few) were scattered across the district of Mersing. These places too boast colorful origins to their namea.
During the Japanese occupancy, Mersing town was set ablaze and the roads and concrete bridge built by the English were destroyed. The Mersing District Council building today stands on the site where the Japanese Administration Centre was once located.
It is believed that the first settlers in Mersing hailed from the state of Terengganu, based on the fact that several villages here continue to traditionally produce ‘keropok lekor’. In fact, some residents here speak fluently with the Terengganu accent, further suggesting the authenticity of this theory.
